Flying Nightingales Display

D-Day Display Hails Flying Nightingales

Florence Nightingale Museum

A new small display, opening this May, will throw new light on a group of brave women who were an integral part of D-Day, but whose work has largely fallen from history – The Flying Nightingales.

Opening on International Nurses Day – also the 204th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth – the Flying Nightingales display will tell the stories of the ordinary women, trained in the nursing style of Florence Nightingale, who were thrust into the arena of war during D-Day.

Flying Nightingales

The Flying Nightingales

Featuring personal testimonies and objects, In Focus: The Flying Nightingales runs from 12th May to December 2024 at the Florence Nightingale Museum. Dedicated to the mother of modern nursing, the Museum sits in the grounds of St Thomas’s Hospital in central London.

6th June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the beginning of the Normandy Invasion, a major event of the Second World War, during which allied forces landed in five places along the coast of Northern France before pushing inland to liberate France from Germany, and ultimately end the War.

During the War, the Royal Air Force Air Ambulance Unit, dubbed the Flying Nightingales, was formed.

Drawn from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), many Flying Nightingales had nursing backgrounds and worked as orderlies, helping to move supplies and servicemen across the country.

During planning for the Normandy invasion, they were asked if they would be prepared to head into the scenes of battles to treat injured soldiers, deliver equipment and help to bring casualties home. Among the women featured are:

Corporal Lydia Alford responded to a call for those with a medical background to train for air ambulance duties. Before very long at all, she picked up her ‘Mae West’ life jacket, parachute and medical panniers and boarded a plane to France to save wounded soldiers. Alford continued flying for the rest of the war, venturing further and further into Europe.

When Corporal Elsie Beer made her first flight to France on 18th June 1944, she became the fourth Flying Nightingale.

During her service, Beer amassed nearly 400 flying hours across Europe, helping to evacuate both British and German casualties to the UK. Beer encountered danger often, not least when shot at by a sniper while walking back to her airbase.

Corporal Phyllis Bull

In 1940, having grown up in poor circumstances in Wiltshire, Phyllis Bull jumped at the chance to join the WAAF. By 1942, she had been promoted to Corporal and was posted to RAF Marston Moor, North Yorkshire.

She experienced the tragedies of war, including the plane crash which killed her boyfriend Bernard, a wireless operator and gunner based at another local air base.

Bull went on to become an Air Ambulance orderly, making hazardous journeys to take equipment and supplies to France and bring back injured men.

Katie Edwards, Director of the Florence Nightingale Museum says, “We are honoured to be bringing the names, lives and achievements of an under-celebrated group of extremely brave women back to some sort of prominence.

“The Flying Nightingales were flung into action in the days following D-Day, carrying the influence and teachings of the founder of modern nursing with them. We are delighted to be honouring them here now.”

Florence Nightingale Museum

During the Second World War, the site of the Florence Nightingale Museum, St Thomas’ Hospital, was an important location for wartime medical treatment and community support.

Patients were treated there and people could find shelter, food and tea if their homes had been affected by bomb damage. People who worked at the hospital stayed there during heavy raids and provided round-the-clock care as casualties returned from D-Day landings.

Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing, instrumental in the development of contemporary nursing.

A global female icon since the Victorian period, she remains an inspiration to nurses due to her campaign work for better healthcare for ordinary people.

Florence Nightingale Museum

The Flying Nightingales display is at the Florence Nightingale Museum, 2 Lambeth Palace Road, London SE1 7EP.

The Museum is a short walk from Waterloo station and Westminster tube, located in the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital (on the corner of Westminster Bridge and Lambeth Palace Road), close to the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

The Flying Nightingales exhibition runs from 12th May to December 2024.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

North Yorkshire Moors Railway Gala

NYMR D9537

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has confirmed the return of its Diesel Gala from 14th – 16th June 2024.

The NYMR has also confirmed the gala’s first guest locomotive, Deltic No. 55009 ‘Alycidon’, courtesy of the Deltic Preservation Society (DPS). During this visit, No. 55009 is painted and numbered in the guise of long-scrapped Deltic No. 55013 ‘The Black Watch’. The locomotive was originally introduced to traffic in 1961 and named ‘Alycidon’, maintaining the ‘racehorse’ tradition of the LNER by commemorating the winner of the 1949 Ascot Gold Cup.

The locomotive ended BR service in 1982, and after being purchased by the DPS, underwent a major overhaul, visiting the NYMR for the first time in the very same year.

The NYMR will also be welcoming No. 45108 and D9537 as guest locomotives, both courtesy of the East Lancashire Railway.  No. 45108 was built in 1961 and is a brilliant example of the Class 45 diesel engines in bright British Railways Blue livery. D9537 ‘Eric’ was built in 1965 at the British Railway’s Swindon Works.

The Diesel Gala in the Summer will feature a jam-packed timetable including evening running, featuring three guest locomotives. Many services will also be offering a selection of beers and ciders served from the on-board buffet bars.

As well as visiting locomotives, the NYMR home fleet of diesel workhorses will be on the timetable of services, including No. 37264 and D7628 ‘Sybilla’. There will also be traders including Rail Riders, Transport Past Times, and Pywell Models.

Blenheim Fashion Icons Exhibition

Blenheim Palace has collaborated with some of Britain’s most iconic fashion designers and brands to create Icons of British Fashion, the largest exhibition in its 300-year history. The exhibition is open now and runs until 30th June, and is sponsored by nearby British luxury retail destination; Bicester Village.

From the moment visitors arrive and step onto the red carpet leading up to the Palace, they’ll experience a world-class fashion exhibition featuring designs and displays by the late Dame Vivienne Westwood, Jean Muir, Terry de Havilland, Bruce Oldfield, Turnbull & Asser, Zandra Rhodes, Lulu Guinness, Barbour, Alice Temperley, Stella McCartney and Stephen Jones Millinery for Christian Dior.

Blenheim Fashion Icons Exhibition

Curated amongst Blenheim Palace’s own priceless collections, each room in Britain’s Greatest Palace will pay homage to a British fashion icon and feature a display of renowned classic pieces, as well as never-before-seen looks – including unique items crafted exclusively by Lulu Guinness for Blenheim Palace.

Along the exhibition there’ll also be a variety of photo opportunities for guests to have their fashion moment in the spotlight.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site has also worked closely with some of the designers to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of its own fashion icon, Sir Winston Churchill.

Blenheim Fashion Icons Exhibition

The exhibition will unveil a captivating collection including one of the original Churchill Siren Suits on loan from Turnbull & Asser, as well as a new take on the iconic boiler suit and a specially designed smoking cap by Stephen Jones. On closer inspection, the velvet cap will feature Winston Churchill’s hand-embroidered initials as well as a clementine, in honour of his wife, within the lining.

Dominic Hare, Chief Executive of Blenheim Palace says, “It is an honour to welcome the work and creativity of some of the most iconic fashion labels of our time to Blenheim Palace. The whole team here have worked tirelessly to bring to life what has been years in the making, to ensure the exhibition is a hugely exciting and captivating experience for our visitors.

“Blenheim Palace has played a significant role in the UK’s fashion industry: it has hosted fashion shows; photoshoots; and many designers have been guests of the family over the years. Christian Dior hosted two shows here in 1954 and 1958 in aid of the Red Cross, and then returned in 2016 for their Cruise Collection.

Blenheim Fashion Icons Exhibition

“Cecil Beaton has also done shoots with the family, and we have been the location of many brand campaigns over the years. We have a rich fashion history and this exhibition should help cement our legacy in this fascinating industry.”

A Bicester Village spokesperson added: “We’re delighted to be supporting the ‘Icons of British Fashion’ exhibition at Blenheim Palace. Our sponsorship signifies Bicester Village’s commitment to homegrown talent including British design icons found within our own stable of luxury boutiques such as Vivienne Westwood, Barbour and Stella McCartney.

“In supporting cultural endeavours such as this, Bicester Village continues its dedication to shaping a narrative that celebrates both the heritage of British fashion, the future of British designers and the evolution of experiential retail.”
